The Role

Carey’s Zero program offers Year 10 students a unique and enriching pathway that will be a key feature of the annual program.  The Zero program offers students an experiential learning experience centred around real world learning and wellbeing.

In addition to course work completed within the classroom, the program includes a three-week journey exploring Far North Queensland with a focus on people, land and the Australian environment.

In collaboration with the Zero team and key stakeholders, the Deputy Head of Zero – Programming is responsible for the smooth operational of each three-week Zero journey.

This is a full-time, fixed term role for a period of 12 months, commencing 27 January 2026.

This role is based in Victoria, with a relocation period to Far North Queensland across Terms 2 and 3.

The Average Day:

  • Manage the program calendar, including the coordination with stakeholders, budgeting and resource management
  • Lead groups on program, providing instructional and logistical support
  • Work in collaboration with key internal stakeholders to recruit, engage and guide Zero Program staff members
  • Promote the program through various channels and contribute to strategic development
  • Play a key role in student health, safety and risk management of the program by conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance and managing incident reports
  • Engage in professional learning to maintain high standards of leadership.

The Person

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • A desire and passion for working with students in outdoor environments
  • Significant experience in a school setting; running and overseeing large student programs with an outdoor element
  • Outstanding communication skills high levels of emotional intelligence
  • Proven ability to manage OHS and risk assessments for a variety of settings
  • Prior experience leading teams of staff with varying levels of outdoor experience
  • Experience with resource management and budgeting
  • Experience with food handling and ordering.

A valid Victorian Institute Teaching (VIT) registration is a requirement of employment in this position.
