The Role
The Education Outdoors Program facilitates experiential learning opportunities for students from Early Learning to Year 12, providing a range of outdoor and environmental activities with an underlying focus on environmental awareness, sustainable living practices, effective teamwork, and personal development.

As a valuable contributor within the highly collaborative Education Outdoors Team, responsibilities of this role include program planning, preparation, and educational delivery. Supporting the delivery of a diverse range of outdoor adventure activities, this hands-on role also provides direct activity instruction and supervision, working across all outdoor education programs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning and Preparation:

  • Collaborate with the Education Outdoors Team to develop age-appropriate program plans, that support learning opportunities aligned to the Education Outdoors Program objectives and Australian Curriculum. Actively seek opportunities to continually embed the College’s Learner Attributes within the Education Outdoors Program.
  • Identify the diverse learning, social and emotional needs of students attending Education Outdoors Programs, including those with individual learning needs or disabilities. Ensure program plans appropriately accommodate different learning styles and physical abilities.
  • Identify the diverse medical and dietary needs of students attending Education Outdoors Programs. Work closely across the Education Outdoors Team and with relevant College staff to ensure appropriate plans are established to support positive and safe student participation.
  • Ensure student activities and program delivery is undertaken in accordance with College policies and procedures, and relevant regulatory requirements. Appropriate levels of risk assessment and mitigation are to be undertaken during the planning and preparation phases for all programs.
  • Ensure robust logistics and contingency planning is undertaken to ensure all programs are facilitated in an efficient and effective manner, with appropriate resources to support planned activities and unplanned incident response needs.
  • Facilitate and implement the routine inspection, maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of a range of specialist equipment, facilities and transport required for delivery of the Education Outdoors Program. Ensure all maintenance and safety needs of equipment are undertaken in a timely manner to support accessibility for program delivery.
  • Support students and families in preparation for program participation, including the provision of advice, guidance, and support through briefing sessions, packing sessions and family liaison.

Education Outdoor Program Delivery:

  • Work highly collaboratively across the Education Outdoors Team to deliver programs safely and effectively, in accordance with program plans and objectives.
  • Provide activity-based instruction and supervision. Outdoor adventure activities may include (but are not limited) to camping, bush cooking, bush walking, navigation, land care, raft building, canoeing, river and sea kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking, high and low ropes courses, surfing, and caving.
  • As a dynamic teacher, ensure students are supported, inspired, and highly engaged to learn. Differentiate teaching to accommodate different learning styles and abilities, as required.
  • Regularly assess student progress, providing timely and constructive feedback to students on progress against the learning objectives of the program.
  • Provide the pastoral care and wellbeing needs of students and promote positive student behaviour. Facilitate restorative justice informed approaches to behaviour management when required.
  • Ensure programs are delivered within the parameters established during risk mitigation planning. Actively supervise students and program support staff and facilitate dynamic risk management during program delivery, to ensure the health and safety of all is prioritised.
  • Promote and model environmental and sustainability awareness, appreciation, action, and education through the delivery of the Education Outdoors Program.
  • Provide direction, support and clear communication to activity instructors, support staff, and class-based teachers to ensure programs are facilitated in an effective and well organised manner.

Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Teaching and Learning: Proven ability as an outstanding teacher, with demonstrated passion for inspiring, guiding and supporting young and adolescent children in realising their potential. Proficient in a range of instructional strategies and pedagogical practices, knowledge of inquiry-based learning advantageous.
  2. Outdoor Education: Demonstrated experience incorporating all facets of outdoor and environmental education, preferrable including adventure activity instruction. Ability to establish a positive and inclusive learning environments that promote character development, with demonstrated skills in managing student behaviour to foster a respectful and collaborative culture.
  3. Safety and Risk Management: Proficient understanding of the regulatory requirements underpinning education delivered outdoors, with highly developed judgement and risk management skills to support the safe and effective delivery of programs.
  4. Collaboration and Teamwork: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents, and the wider school community. Demonstrated ability to foster a strong sense of teamwork in the delivery of program objectives.
  5. Agility and Organisation: Demonstrated agility, with well-developed organizational skills and proven ability to adapt within dynamic environments. Able to manage complex logistical arrangements in real time.
  6. Safeguarding Children: a demonstrated commitment to actively contribute to the College’s safeguarding culture for children and young people, including an understanding of the College’s policies in relation to Child Safety.
